My husband and I have been having an awful experience with Jared regarding my engagement ring. Unlike every complaint I've seen so far (mainly diamonds and platinum), my ring is rose gold and what should be a natural, white Australian opal.

My original engagement ring was absolutely gorgeous and beautiful - husband and I picked it out together as something to truly represent 'us' and our story. I started noticing over the course of a few months that my opal was looking a bit discolored and I thought that there was maybe some dirt trapped in the setting, etc. so took it in for a cleaning (opals are delicate so didn't want to do it at home and mess it up) and to check that the side diamonds were in good shape as part of the maintenance/warranty policy. The woman STEAMED my opal and put it in the SONIC CLEANER, which is a huge no-no, and by the next day - the opal was completely yellow and had lost its luster.

Took it to have it appraised and was told it was a treated Mexican Jelly Opal, not an Australian white opal. We took it back and explained what happened and Jared offered to issue us a new ring (same collection, same style, just new) as they admitted the woman should not have 'cleaned' the opal the way she had. Well, cut to now - they've replaced my ring with a SYNTHETIC OPAL! We were told that we would receive another ring, but at no time was a synthetic gemstone mentioned or discussed.

I am severely disappointed as I personally do not like the look of synthetic opals and would have requested a full reimbursement rather than replacement if I had known that was their intention. Now, when we have gone to them to say that they pulled a blatant and seedy bait-and-switch, we can't get anywhere. No explanation, no returned calls, no offer of refunds or even store credit. Additionally, my ring was relatively inexpensive compared to some other engagement rings (less than $1,000) because I went with a non-traditional gemstone.

So it seems like there is very little financial gain to be had by cheating us out of what we paid for. They'll swindle any and all who purchase from them, regardless of price range. Jared's is a horrible company that has zero regard for their customers or the quality of their products. I've become so paranoid at this point, I've even done extensive studying on gemstones and their properties and purchased a jewelry loop tool so I can have it on hand the next time my husband and I shop for fine jewelry.

I will be sticking to small, local jewelers from now on, and watch every step of the process like a hawk.

It's terrible to abuse and take advantage of consumers in this way, but especially when your business caters to engagement and wedding jewelry - these are the pieces that mean and represent so much, how dare someone try to cheat anyone at that! If anyone has any further information regarding actions against Jared's, I'd love to hear about it.

Reason of review: Not as described/ advertised.

aulstrian opals are very expensive usually in the $2000 plus a caret range for good material.

Jared's sells only lab created and ethiopian opals. if it was stated that it was aulstrain you should sue.

ethiopain opals can be as lovely as austiralin mateiral but often had oranges and yellows in it

This is so true. My husband and I bought an opal ring from Jared's.

The next day, the ring was completely cloudy and there was absolutely no luster to the ring. When the ring became wet, the cloudiness factor increased tenfold. I was really confused and when we went to get it appraised, it was actually at best an inferior sliver of opal between what look like glass or plastic. I don't know if your opal resembled a small round piece of glass with a clouded bottom near the setting and with a tiny bit of opal in the middle.

We were severely disappointed. We ended up purchasing an Australian fire opal from a small local jeweler. We will never ever buy from Jareds again.

He went to Jared's? No more like he went to get ripped off.
